| 説明 | One of the odder national symbols in the US is the "Eye of Providence." As it appears in the Great Seal (and, as shown here, on the back of the one dollar bill), "the Eye is positioned above an unfinished pyramid of thirteen steps (symbolizing the original States, but also incorporating the nation's potential for future growth). Such symbolism is explained through the motto that appears above the Eye, annuit cœptis" (per wikipedia). The Latin translates roughly to "He approves."Soon after 9/11, the symbol was re-purposed for DARPA's "Total Information Awareness" program, and its choice of Latin phrase translates to "Knowledge is power" (again, per wikipedia). It was unveiled with great fanfare, and to considerable horror -- indeed, the project was de-funded by Congress the following year (though Snowden-era leaks revealed that components of the program had not been shut down). I just think it's funny that some bureaucrat figured "A benevolent deity looks down in approval" was somehow equivalent to "An all-seeing government looks down in judgement."The symbol is also associated with Freemasonry, though it appeared on the US Seal before the Freemasons began using it.
