説明Built in 1859, this Italianate-style building was possibly designed by James Renwick Jr. and constructed for Geologist David Dale Owen to serve as a laboratory. The building was utilized as Owen’s laboratory for only a year before his death in 1860, after which his large collection of specimens was transferred to Indiana University, and the building became the home of his daughter, Nina Owen Parke, and his nephews, H.P. Owen and E.F. Owen. The building features a red brick exterior with an asymmetrical composition, multiple oriel windows, an octagonal cupola, dentils and brackets at the eaves, arched windows on the upper level, a quatrefoil window on the front gable, six-over-six double-hung windows with decorative window hoods, a cast iron porch on the Church Street facade, and a cylindrical tower with a conical roof featuring a finial with a fish on the rear facade. The building is a contributing structure in the New Harmony Historic District, designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1965, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1966. The house remains in the ownership of the Owen family.
