| 説明 | I.Pergamon 276, I.Pergamon 27723 Fragments recovered while unearthing the vaults of the Trajaneum substructures. Four others were discovered during the excavations of the late 19th century and are kept in the Pergamon Museum in Berlin (inserted here as mouldings). In this letter dated December 22, 137 AD, Hadrian denies permission with harsh words to the Pergamenes to build him a temple. His disapproval is based on the fact that the city was already granted two imperial cult temples (one for Roma and Augustus as well as one for Zeus Philius and Trajan). His attempt to outdo once again the rivals Smyrna and Ephesus in rank and prestige definitely failed. However, as compensation, Hadrian allows the Pergamenes to erect a statue of him by the side of his adoptive father's statue, Trajan, in the latter's temple (the Trajaneum) and to incorporate it into the cult.Transcript: To the Good Fortune, Imperator Caesar Hadrian Augustus, son of the divine Trajan, grandson of the divine Nerva, pontifex maximus, granted with the tribunicia potestas for the twenty-second time, imperator for the second time, three times consul, pater patria (Father of the Fatherland), to the Magistrates, Council and People of Pergamon, greeting:Your willingness, by which you are eager to build me a temple, is [- -], and I appreciate this (your) attitude. The current achievements of the city are, however, sufficient. You already have two temples of outstanding monumentality and excellent reputation as well as two competitions, two ateleiai (temporary exemptions from customs and taxes, in relation to the competitions). But if you add another temple, you will sacrifice the wealth of these two for something new; even if you would like to finance everything by yourself, I would not like the city to plunge into expenses and excessive costs because of me.But because of your zeal to honour me somewhere with a statue, you are allowed to consecrate me (a cult statue of line) in the temple of my father, by his side - knowing that I rejoice his temples more than mine.Served as ambassadors Cl(audius) Menogenes, [...], Cl(audius) Pardalas, lulius [---], Ulpius Asklepiades, [---], on their return, the travel expenses should be refunded to them, if they have not promised (to take the embassy) at their own costs.FarewellThe 11th day before the Calends of January, from Rome. (Published) under the responsibility of the Strategoi, under the presidency of Sextus Claudius Aisimos. |
