| 説明 | Built in 1849 and heavily renovated in 1914 to its present appearance, this Renaissance Revival-style building was constructed to serve as the Masonic Hall for St. Charles, before becoming a saddlery and harness shop between 1865 and 1895. Between 1914 and 1976, the building was home to the St. Charles Elks Lodge. The building features a terra cotta facade with fluted pillars flanking the bays, a serpentinite marble-clad first floor and base, casement windows with transoms, decorative spandrel panels, a copper canopy over the arched front entrance bay, decorative terra cotta panels around the third floor front window bays, a red terra cotta tile bonnet roof and awning, decorative brackets at the top of the pillars, a cartouche with a decorative sculptural relief of an elk at the center of the front parapet, and a two-story red brick rear ell. The building is a contributing structure in the St. Charles Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970, and expanded to its present size in 1996. |
