| 説明 | Built in 1838, this Federal-style house was constructed for Franklin Newbill, a mill owner, as a three-bay, one-story house, and was expanded in 1858 by Dr. William McElhiney, a physician and state legislator, with the addition of the second floor and the two northern bays of the facade. The house features a painted brick exterior, raised basement, rough-hewn stone base, six-over-six and eight-over-eight double-hung windows, gable parapets at the side facades, stone sills and lintels, brick corbeling at the base of the eaves, a front door with a transom, and large front porch with rectilinear columns, wooden balustrades, and a rooftop deck. The building is a contributing structure in the St. Charles Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970, and expanded to its present size in 1996. |
