| 説明 | Built in 1821, this Federal-style building served as the first purpose-built Missouri State Capitol from 1821 until 1826, when the state government moved to Jefferson City. The building’s original eleven-bay section features a red flemish bond brick exterior with twelve-over-twelve double-hung windows, a side-gable roof with parapets, two carriageways with arched openings on the first floor, paneled wooden doors, a rough-hewn stone base, chimneys at the ends of the building, retail spaces on the ground floor, and a meeting hall for the state government on the second floor. To the south is a three-bay structure with a red common bond brick exterior, twelve-over-eight double-hung windows on the second floor and twelve-over-twelve double-hung windows on the first floor, a brick parapet with a chimney at the end wall, and a side-gable roof. The building housed the state government and retail space until 1826, and then housed a variety of local businesses between 1826 and 1960, and was modified during this time. In 1960, the building was purchased by the State of Missouri, and was restored between 1961 and 1971 by the state government. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1969, and is a contributing structure in the St. Charles Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970, and expanded to its present size in 1996. The building is presently part of a museum run by Missouri State Parks, and features restored interior spaces and interpretive exhibits of early Missouri state history. |
