| 説明 | and the first one is (ever so slightly) crackedfocus stack of 40 images, using a 20mm extension tube on a 105mm macro lensmy goal this week was to (finally) learn how to do focus stacking. i've seen some impressive work here at MM (and on flickr more broadly), and the basic idea seemed staightforward enough: just take a lot of pictures with the focus changing slightly from image to image, and then just merge them, using the in-focus bits of each individual image. how hard could it be?the composition is meh, and the white balance is terrible (feel free to step in and contradict me...), but i am really happy to have achieved such a large depth of field. on the individual images, you could tell from the green sparkly paper that there was a very narrow line of focus. a possible downside is that i didn't get much bokeh from that paper (but you can see some in the upper right corner)one trick which i didn't read about (but i bet everybody already knows) was i set the camera to just take a picture every 4 seconds, as if it were doing time-lapse; that way i didn't have to think about hitting the shutter button in between twisting the knob on the focus rail [*,**]the second trick was to use Petteri Aimonen's free/open-source focus-stack software. i built it from source; there were zero glitches, and it worked great. [***,****][*] many years ago, i even bought a focus rail, but had never got around to trying it out (you know, life). but this week, i finally dug it out of the closet.[**] i tried both using the focus rail (which moves the whole camera) and using the focus ring on a stationary camera. i'm still not sure which is actually better, but i slightly preferred the focus rail because (a) it involved using new gear, and (b) it seemed easier to make small/regular adjustments.[***] i had also tried the "hugin" package, and that sort-of worked, but (a) not nearly as well, and (b) not nearly as fast -- it is really more oriented toward panoramas (since the "hard part" of both panorama stitching and focus stacking is the alignemnt of the images, it makes sense in principle to have one package do both; but as they say: in principle, what works in principle ought to work in practice; but in practice, it often doesn't).[****] i've heard great things about helicon focus, and it looks like they are in Ukraine, so all the more reason to support them! only issue (for me) is that the software does not appear to be distributed for my ubuntu-flavored linux operating system.[*****] sorry for such a long figure caption. i hope you didn't make it this far... |
