説明 | On Tuesday 16 May 1995, a Royal Air Force Nimrod R1 aircraft suffered an in-flight engine fire which led to the aircraft having to ditch in the Moray Firth, Scotland. The R1 was always a secret aircraft as it was configured for electronic "spying". It had been at nearby RAF Kinloss for servicing and was on a test flight when a serious fire started. The pilot tried to return to the nearest airfield (RAF Lossiemouth) but as the wing was almost about to separate from the aircraft he had no option but to "ditch" the aircraft. Fortunately the entire crew managed to escape the aircraft and were were picked up shortly thereafter by an air-sea rescue helicopter that was flying nearby. This is one of the few instances of a full-sized airliner making a safe landing on open water (The Nimrod is based on the De Havilland (Hawker Siddeley/ BAE) Comet airliner). "Sully" was not the first !I was only 10 miles away when this happened and a few days later was a witness to the salvage operation to retrieve the secret aircraft. The remains of the cockpit of his rare aircraft is on display at South Yorkshire Aircraft Museum in Doncaster, England. For years I had wanted to go and see it but recently managed to do so in August 2023. Of the four R1's two are still intact and can be found at RAF Cosford and the East Midlands Aeropark. |
