| 説明 | This unusual structure, now nearly all collapsed, is what remains of an experimental VHF direction finding (DF) station. At the centre of the site stood an octagonal tower, conical in profile, at the tope of which would likley have been fitted a directional antenna. As with other DF sites and techniques of the 1930s and 1940s, the antenna would have been rotated from inside the cabin until the signal being analysed was strongest. This indicated that the antenna was pointing at the transmitter (VHF would likely have been aircraft). The bearing of this signal could then be sent to a plotting room and the transmitter triangulated with additional bearings received from nearby DF stations.The site has a very ephemeral feel to it, and in fact the slow destruction of the site has revealed some stencilling on one of the structural panels. It reads "Case No. 17 or 22" suggesting this wood was recycled from a shipping crate.Around the DF building are four bearing markers, set with the numbers 0, 90, 180 and 270. Interestingly while 0 degrees and 270 degree markers are correct, set at due north and west accordingly, the 90 degree marker sits due south (180 deg) and 180 degree is placed due east (90 deg).The walls had been filled with imported pea gravel, and it has been suggested this was to provide an element of protection from shrapnel or bullets from attacking aircraft. There is also evidence on the walls of a tarring, added to the plywood panels to enhance weather protection. |
