| 説明 | The Dr. M. Burton Eshleman House, 17 Willowlawn Street, Buffalo, New York, February 2021. Built in 1906, the Eshleman House presents the Arts & Crafts school of architecture in a simplified and vernacularized version that lacks some of the more ornate detailing you'll find on other examples of the style. The eaves of the roof overhang widely, with exposed rafter tails especially prominent above the enclosed front porch surrounding the entrance as well as knee-brace brackets above the front gable. Diamond-shaped latticework in the second-floor casement windows is also a nice touch. Dr. Moss Burton Eshleman (1864-1928) was a Canadian-born dentist whose practice was located at what's now the site of the Sunoco gas station at the corner of Elmwood and Hodge Avenues. He was one of the original property owners on this diminutive street that was not laid out until well after most of the others in the Parkside East Historic District (it took its name from that of Elam Jewett's suburban estate, which once occupied all of the land between Main Street, West Oakwood Place, Amherst Street, and Delaware Park, save for the old Washington Russell property). Eshleman lived in the house until 1915, when he moved to a larger residence across the street from his office. |
