| 説明 | On August 17, 2023, BOEM staff visited the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History's Sant Ocean Hall in Washington, D.C. to view some of the specimens BOEM has contributed to the museum's archival marine invertebrate collection.BOEM and the Smithsonian Institution have maintained a long and productive partnership since 1979. Not only does this partnership benefit both agencies, but it also increases the public’s access to scientific information.Invertebrates collected during BOEM’s research studies are stored and studied at the National Museum of Natural History. Thanks to these federally funded collections over 350 new species were identified. Over the years, the partnership has expanded beyond collections and now includes DNA barcoding. The combined information about a specimen’s physical appearance and its DNA barcode can improve the quality of ecological research and help detect cryptic or invasive species. The Smithsonian’s world-class analysis of BOEM’s and other offshore invertebrate collections increases understanding of marine biodiversity and environmental changes.(photo: Yon Timbal/BOEM.gov) |
