Throughout the 1800 and 1900s, Lees Ferry was backdrop to a mix of Westward expansion dreams and failed schemes. Because of its strategic location along the Colorado River, unlikely groups overlapped on these shores. Miners, traders, U.S. government scientists, Church elders, and the occasional outlaw shared the trials of frontier life here. Walk the River Trail to glimpse the myriad people and purposes that left a mark on Lees Ferry. Great Expectations. Prospector Charles H. Spencer made an outsized impact on Lees Ferry in his short time here. A better salesman than miner, Spencer never succeeded in extracting minerals the way he succeeded in exciting investors. When he staked his claim at Lees Ferry, financial investors and hardworking miners went along for the ride, but never struck it rich with Charlie. Timeline of Those Who Came and Went. Historic District River Trail. 2 miles (3.2 km) round trip. Mixed terrain includes gravel, sandy, and rocky uneven surfaces. Nominal elevation change. Stroll past historic structures and sites with informative signs for a self-guided walking tour. Spencer Trail. 4.4 miles (7 km) round trip. Mixed terrain including gravel, sandy surfaces, hard packed ground, rocky steps, and steep, loose scree. 1,700 ft (0.5 km) elevation gain. Little to no shade. Diverge from the River Trail to climb switchbacks up the cliff. The reward is the view. Steep hike to great views. Hiking Safety. Watch your step. Trails are unmaintained and in a natural condition. Bring plenty of water. Wear sturdy footwear. Take care in extreme temperatures. Do not hike during hottest part of the day. Be flash flood aware. Show wildlife respect by keeping a safe distance. Pets allowed on trail. Keep on leash no longer than 6 feet (1.8 m). Do not remove any natural or cultural object from the park, including fossils, rocks, animals, plants, and artifacts." |
