| 説明 | Church of St Michael , East Buckland Devon; The 15c tower survived the 1860 - 1861 pulling down of the church & rebuilding of the nave, with the chancel in the position of the former south aisle. The south porch also rebuilt at that time has a reset 18c sundial above the door warning in a latin inscription that "Time flies, death comes" www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/94zg4JU66LThe rebuilding was financed by Hugh, 2nd Earl Fortescue who, according to a memorial in the church, "endowed the chaplaincy of the county school and rebuilt and enlarged this church for the joint benefit of the school and this parish, but died 14th September 1861 just before the completion of his pious work"Built of roughly coursed stone rubble with slate roofs and coped gable ends with apex crosses, it consists of a two stage west tower, nave, chancel. vestry & south porch. The tower has its original buttresses and is topped with an embattled parapet. There is a rectangular stair turret on north side. The infilled tower arch once led eastwards to the former nave. flic.kr/p/djzZVmThe interior also refurbished in 1860 has unrendered stone walls & arch-braced roofs to chancel and nave. There is a painted Royal Arms over south porch doorway www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/DooQ8Z681T & a Charity Board in vestry.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hugh_Fortescue,_2nd_Earl_FortescuePicture with grateful thanks - copyright Ian www.cornishchurches.com/East%20Buckland%20Church%20Devon%... |
