説明Farringdon Underground Station (Metropolitan, Hammersmith & City and Circle Lines), 19 August 2023.The first station was opened in January 1863 (named Farringdon Street) as the eastern terminus of the Metropolitan Railway’s sub-surface line from Paddington (Bishop’s Road) - the first underground railway in the world. The station was soon resited in December 1865. It was rebuilt in 1922 when it was renamed Farringdon & High Holborn. The rebuilt station was designed by the MR’s Chief Architect (1921-33) Charles Walter Clark in neo-Classical style with a façade in white faience. Although very attractive, in my opinion it looks conservative – even old fashioned – compared to the Moderne-style stations Charles Holden was building at the same time on the Morden Extension of the City and South London Railway (now the City Branch of the Northern Line). Interestingly, it was built in conjunction with a livestock station to take cattle to a slaughterhouse serving nearby Smithfield Market, though that facility was last used in the late 1920’s. The station was again renamed Farringdon in 1936. The MR-supported Hammersmith & City Railway (H&CR - from 1867 bought by the MR and GWR) also introduced services to Farringdon. In addition, the station became a stop on the Metropolitan Railway/Metropolitan District Railway (usually branded the District Railway – DR) jointly-worked ‘Inner Circle’ service, partly introduced in 1868 but not finally completed until 1884. It should be mentioned that in 1866 the MR built additional lines – the Metropolitan Widened Lines – parallel to its underground lines from Kings Cross/St. Pancras for the Midland Railway’s and Great Northern Railway’s own suburban routes to Moorgate and also via the London, Chatham & Dover Railway’s Snow Hill Tunnel to Blackfriars main line station. New platforms were built next to the MR’s platforms. However, in 2009 the Widened Lines stretch from Farringdon to Moorgate was severed as new, longer Thameslink trains could not be easily accommodated at Moorgate and they now proceed from Farringdon to Blackfriars and beyond. New entrances and ticket halls were provided at the same time. These also serve TfL’s Crossrail/Elizabeth Line trains since 2022.It is a Grade II listed building.Pictured is 'FARRINGDON & HIGH HOLBORN' lettering, the name of the 1922 station. The letters are in gold and in Clark's serif font.
