説明 | Built in 1885-1886, this Richardsonian Romanesque Revival-style water tower was designed by William S. Eames to serve as a standpipe for the city water system of St. Louis, and remained in service until 1912. The tower features a red brick exterior, rough-hewn limestone trim, a circular balcony at the base of the lantern at the top of the tower, a rusticated stone base, a pyramidal hipped roof with chamfered corners, and multiple stair-stepped windows running up on each of the four sides of the tower. The tower was threatened with demolition in the 1950s and 1960s, but public sentiment and outcry led to the tower being retained as a feature of North St. Louis, and it was rehabilitated and stabilized in the 1970s. The tower was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970, and today remains a local landmark, standing prominently atop a hill. |
