説明 | Paddington Underground Station (Circle & District Lines), 19 August 2023.The station was opened in 1868 by the Metropolitan Railway as Paddington (Praed Street), on a branch of its Hammersmith - Moorgate Street line, to Gloucester Road to link up with the Metropolitan District Railway as part of the 'Inner Circle' route the two railways were constructing jointly; both companies ran trains over each other's tracks. Praed Street station was completely separate from the MR's earlier Paddington (Bishop Road) station. Both the station building and trainshed over the platforms of the Praed Street station were designed by the MR's chief engineer John Fowler, but the station building was replaced by a new station building designed by the MR's Assistant Architect Charles Walter Clark in 1914 in neo-Classical style. It is clad in white faience blocks and is a Grade II listed building. The station was renamed Paddington in 1947 (as was the Bishop's Road station and the Bakerloo's Paddington station) and is now served by the District and Circle Lines (the Circle Line was identified in its own right in 1949 when the Metropolitan Line identification was dropped).Pictured is the frontage. |
