| 説明 | On Saturday 5 August, Burmese activists gathered in central London to mark the anniversary of the 8888 (8 August 1988) uprising against the military junta. The Myanmar government reacted to the protests 35 years ago with a brutal crackdown which led to many casualties. In recent days, and despite the risk of arrest by Burmese security forces, people have taken to the streets of Yangon with 8888 signs to protest the current military junta which came to power in a coup in February 2021. Meanwhile, across thousands of square miles of the eastern regions of the country, a wide scale and intense conflict between the army and rebels has resulted in a horrific death toll, many of them due to war crimes committed by Myanmar’s military. A report by the U.N.’s Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar, published on 30 June 2023, states that ‘Based on the evidence collected to date, there is strong evidence that the Myanmar military and its affiliate militias have committed three types of combat-related war crimes with increasing frequency and brazenness: (a) indiscriminate or disproportionate targeting of civilians using bombs; (b) killings of civilians or combatants detained during operations; and (c) large-scale and intentional burning of civilian dwellings and other civilian buildings’iimm.un.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/G2312500.pdf |
