| 説明 | The RAF radar station at Saxa Vord is a complex and important site in the history of British air defence. First operational in 1957, the site was constructed as part of the ROTOR programme to upgrade the ageing 1940-era Chain Home technology that had protected the country so valiently throughout the Battle of Britain.Situated on the most northerly hilltop in the British Isles, Saxa Vord is difficult to get to, windswept and a harsh place to live never mind construct a radar station. Having closed in 2006 and sold off in around 2012, the main operations site now lies empty and abandoned. The logistical challenges associated with clearing such a sight apparent as much of it remains intact, with some real gems of military paraphernalia remaining. |
