It's on the Czech side of the Ore Mountains, north of the Eger Valley, in a small settlement that protects the Aesculapian snake's rare population.> The island-like occurrence of the tree snake in the valley of the Ohře river between the Doupovské and Ore mountains in the vicinity of the village of Stráž nad Ohří in Karlovy Vary is unique . It is one of the four insular areas in Europe where these snakes are found. There have been several theories of the origin of this isolated population. It was said to be the result of Roman expansions that spread the serpent further north. The Romans worshiped her as a symbol of doctors. Further, that this stock was planted by the Mattoni familyat the end of the 19th century, who allegedly brought it from Italy.
