| 説明 | Church of St Michael and All Angels, Cadbury Devon. ( 'All Angels' may have been added by the Victorians ) Recorded as Cadabiria (Cada's burgh) in the 1086 Domesday Survey, legend says a dragon guarding its treasure, lives in Cadbury Iron Age Hill Fort which towers over the village, There are a series of springs near the churchyard and this may once have been a Pagan place of worshipThere was a church here by 1163 which was given by William FitzRalph and his wife Aldreda to the Priory of St Nicholas in Exeter. The gift was ratified by Thomas Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury. The first known vicar was Everard in 1244The church was rebuilt in Volcanic trap rubble with freestone (mostly Bathstone) dressings in 15c It consists of a nave, chancel, west tower, 4-bay north arcade (1 bay to the chancel) & south porch. The development of the church is not clear but it may begun with only a nave & chancel with a west tower added in the 13c, extended by a 4-bay aisle in about the early 16c when the porch was also added In 1843 the east and tower windows were described as "New" as were the altar and communion rails. The chancel roof mayalso date from the same phase. In 1857 William White rebuilt the south wall, replaced the north side windows and replaced the nave roof. The tower has a large projecting rectangular north stair turret and holds 4 bellsr, the oldest dating to 1430-1450.The 12c Norman font made of volcanic trap was rescued from the ditch beside the churchyard and brought back inside. www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/8i7N2R8u2oThe 17c two sided lectern was brought here from Ottery St Mary church, www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/0k9t57d85fMedieval 15c stained glass survives in the north aisle east window , having been removed from the chancel east window.
