| 説明 | Church of the Holy Trinity, Burrington Devon consists of a chancel, nave, south aisle, south porch, and north embattled tower which holds 6 bells. It dates from c1150, probably replacing an earlier Saxon building of just a nave and chancel. The three stage tower with polygonal south-west stair turret was added c 1250 on the north side - an interesting transeptal position shared with several other Devon churches. Apart from the 12c Norman front, www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/5T9f3zd218 the earliest surviving features are the 13c base to the tower and north wall of the nave and possibly the chancel. The rest of the nave and chancel were rebuilt c 1450 when the south aisle was added with its granite arcade and large Perpendicular windows and south porch, creating the building we see today . The porch is very high reaching and merging with the embattled nave roofline. www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/AZ2m50zRSPOver the nave is a late 15c wagon roof decorated with carved Tudor bosses, www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/31N4D67751 while over the south aisle the roof beams terminate in a series of 36 carved wooden angels holding shields. www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/PKvDWak1B6The early 16c Tudor screen is of the most interest, now being painted sky-blue, with the carving in the spaces between the ribs of the groining picked out in gilt and colour. The groining and cornices are complete. The nine ribs to each shaft of the groining give a wide and fanlike effect. The door itself is marked with musket holes, believed to have been fired by Parliamentary soldiers during the 17c Civil War. www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/52Vg5183x6Samuel Davis, vicar here in the 19c, was married secondly to Elizabeth Blackmore , half-sister of writer RD Blackmore, author of the popular novel Lorna Doone.The church was restored in 1869 by Haywood.
