説明 | Built in 1889, this Richardsonian Romanesque Revival-style building was designed by LeRoy S. Buffington and Harvey Ellis, and was originally known as Science Hall, being renamed for Minnesota Governor John S. Pillsbury while under construction. The building is clad in rough-hewn sandstone with a hipped red terra cotta tile roof, copper flashing and gutters, an eyebrow dormer in the middle of the main roof of the building, medallions that mimic the appearance of flowers above the second-story windows, engaged columns, entrances with large stone trim surrounds, which taper inwards and downwards towards the doorways, windows with transom’s, checkerboard pattern stone on the building above the second-story windows, a circular tower with a bell-shaped roof, and chamfered corners at the end of the building’s east wing. The building is a contributing structure in the University of Minnesota Old Campus Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984, and was rehabilitated between 2017 and 2021, today housing the University of Minnesota’s English Department. |
