説明1903 Heliograph Tripod Head showing top of protective cap. Note the short, narrow double-screw metal fitting on the 1903 tripod, used to clamp the narrow leather sling. In this example, the leather sling has broken off just below the fitting, and is posed above the tripod. The grid paper in the background is a 1" major grid, with 0.1" minor grid. Due to parallax effects, features that are not in contact with the paper will be larger than the grid suggests. The photo you see on this description page is not the full-resolution photo. This album contains photos I took of my 1903 Heliograph Tripod from Spratt Bros., London. In some photos I show it next to my 1940 Heliograph Tripod from Luco Art Metal Co Ltd, London, to show the differences in the evolution of the heliograph tripod over this period. The main differences are in the metal fittings at the top of the wooden tripod legs, and in the shoulder strap for the tripod. Over this period, heliograph tripods evolved through roughly four patterns:(1) The first pattern, represented by this 1903 tripod, had slim metal fittings at the top of the tripod, a narrow leather sling that was clamped directly to the tripod by double-screw fittings, and a separate leather securing strap that held the legs together for transport.(2) The 2nd pattern, not shown here, had slim metal fittings at the top of the tripod, but had a unified leather sling that attached to a D-ring at the top metal fitting, was secured by a metal loop mid-way down, and formed a boot at the bottom to secure the three legs for transport. The sling flared out from narrow to broad below the D-ring, and narrowed again above the loop. This leather sling was very similar in shape to the all-webbing sling in the 1940 tripod shown here.(3) The 3rd pattern, not shown here, had slim metal fittings at the top of the tripod, but had a mixed webbing and leather sling that attached to a D-ring at the top metal fitting, was secured by a metal loop mid-way down, and attached to a boot at the bottom to secure the three legs for transport. The sling flared out from narrow to broad below the D-ring, and narrowed again above the loop. The only fabric section was the centre section of the broad section. The overall shape of the tripod sling was very similar to the all-webbing sling in the 1940 tripod shown here.(4) The 4rd pattern, seen here in the 1940 example, replaced the slim metal fittings with "full metal jacket" fittings at the top of the tripod, and had an all-webbing sling that attached to a D-ring at the top metal fitting, was secured by a metal loop mid-way down, and attached to a boot at the bottom to secure the three legs for transport. The sling flared out from narrow to broad below the D-ring, and narrowed again above the loop. all-webbing sling in the 1940 tripod shown here.
