説明Built in 1929, this Art Deco-style skyscraper was designed by Holabird and Root to serve as an office building. The building stands 34 stories and 396 feet (121 meters) tall, and is one of several early 20th Century skyscrapers concentrated around the Michigan Avenue Jean Baptiste Pointe du Sable Bridge. The building is clad in polished marble at the base, and in limestone above the fourth floor, with decorative relief panels found on various parts of the exterior at the 5th floor, and at the spandrels between the 24th and 25th floors, 28th and 29th floors, 30th and 31st floors, and 32nd, 33rd, and 34th floors. The windows at the base are tall curtain walls framed by bronze trim, with two oxeye windows flanking three-story curtain walls on the north facade and the north end of the west facade, with a decorative grille around the sides and on the third floor of the curtain wall at the entrance bay on the west facade along Michigan Avenue, which is flanked by two pendant-style Art Deco light fixtures, with a row of unadorned one-over-one windows on the fourth floor. The central bays of the building above the fifth floor at the tower and the south wing feature dark cladding on the recessed spandrels between the windows, accentuating the building’s verticality. The tower portion of the building, which rises higher than the south wing, features setbacks on the upper floors, with tapered piers, chamfered corners, pilasters, juliet balconies, and a low-slope roof enclosed by the parapet at the top of the building. The building is a contributing structure in the Michigan–Wacker Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978, and was designated a Chicago Landmark in 1997. The building continues to function as an office building, with retail spaces in the base along Michigan Avenue.
