| 説明 | Hearst Castle is on the peak to the left. You can just make out the twin towers of Julia Morgan's wonderful design: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hearst_Castle"The Church of Santa María la Mayor, Ronda, Spain -– Hearst's main inspiration." If memory serves, he first saw this church on his Grand Tour of Europe with his mother, Phoebe Apperson Hearst. If you visit -- and you should: this might be the grandest folly on the West Coast -- make sure to watch the CInerama film on Hearst's life. Very nicely done, and you will learn a lot. He had the morning newspapers flown in every morning from SF on his personal DC-3, which also served as the main 'luxury' access to Ranch & Castle. Fresh bread and provisions every morning! Including all The Chief's personal favorites 😇 He was a hearty eater! The highway wasn't paved until many years after Castle construction began. The SP train didn't arrive in SLO City until 1894! This was quite an isolated area until late in the 19th century.High peak to right (S) is Pine Mtn, ~3550 ft elev. Very snowy this winter! This is the main water supply for the Castle and the other Ranch residences. It was designed & built by Julia Morgan, who, like many architects of that era, got good training in Civil Engineering. Miss Morgan was also a pioneer in the use of steel-reinforced concrete in Calif, which is the core of the Castle. Her SRC buildings all stood up well to the great 1916 SF earthquake. Unlike many others! |
