| 説明 | The bridge crossing the Tiber in front of the Castel Sant'Angelo was also built by Emperor Hadrian in 139 AD. It was the primary bridge used by Christian pilgrims visiting St Peter's Basilica, so Gian Lorenzo Bernini was commissioned to add 10 angels to the bridge.Bernini sculpted two of the angels himself, but the pope considered them too beautiful to be exposed to the elements, so he moved Bernini's angels indoors, and they were replaced on the bridge with copies. Each of the ten angels is carrying one of the Instruments of the Passion, objects associated with the crucifixion of Jesus, such as the crown of thorns, the cross, and the nails. |
