説明Osterley Underground Station, 6 April 2023. The original station was opened, on a different, nearby site in 1883 on the Metropolitan District Railway’s extension from Mill Hill Park (now Acton Town) to Hounslow Town. It was named Osterley & Spring Grove but closed in March 1934 when a new replacement station, named Osterley, opened. This station was built by the Underground Electric Railways of London for the extension of Piccadilly Railway services which began running in January 1933 (initially to the old station until the new one was ready). District Line services ceased serving Osterley in October 1964.Frank Pick, the Managing Director of the UERL, gave the responsibility of designing the new stations on the Acton Town – Hounslow extension to his favoured architectural consultant, Charles Holden, rather than the UERL’s own Chief Architect, Stanley Heaps. Despite this awkward situation, the two architects, to their credit, worked well together and Heaps often acted as site advisor on the construction of Holden’s stations and was sometimes given the responsibility of designing the details, as long as he followed Holden’s Modernist principles. A good example is Osterley. Inspired by the Telegraaf Building in Amsterdam which Holden saw on his 1930 North European visit, Holden and his assistant Charles Hutton sketched out a design which was then fleshed out by Heaps, the result being a most impressive building with an illuminated concrete spire on a tower acting as an 'announcement' of the station to its locality. Unlike the neighbouring Boston Manor station, the platform facilities/canoies were also rebuilt, probably entirely the work of Heaps. Pictured are the platforms with concrete canopies with clerestories, almost certainly the work of Heaps. The station is listed Grade II.
