説明 | The purple crested turacos (Gallirex porphyreolophus) were here at the house this morning feeding on the wild fruit that is ripening now. The turacos make up the bird family Musophagidae, a group of birds that have pigments called porphyrins - which gives them their bright green and red feathers. These pigments are bright red under ultraviolet light, and since birds can see into ultraviolet, we can imagine that these bird colours must be much more vivid trough a bird's eyes. Mind you, they are already pretty vivid. You can learn more about colours in birds by watching for my webinar "Colour as made and seen in birds" coming later this year. |
