| 説明 | Eucalyptus globulus, uprooted in the recent storms, lost its bark in the surf over about 3 feet or so. I dusted off most of the sand & snapped its photo. Gorgeous wood! This is the species planted most widely in California from the 1850s on. It was planted in hope of a timber bonanza. DIdn't happen! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eucalyptus#North_America"the young trees being harvested in California could not compare in quality to the centuries-old Eucalyptus timber of Australia. It reacted differently to harvest. The older trees didn't split or warp as the infant California crop did. There was a vast difference between the two, and this would doom the California Eucalyptus industry." They do make a good windbreak, which is why these were planted on the Hearst Ranch, starting in the 1860s. Some of these old trees can be seen in old San Simeon. Noble trees! They grow almost to the high-waterline. |
