| 説明 | Free Church St. Here is the red brick Presbyterian Church. The first church built in Maitland was the Scots Kirk in 1832. The current red brick Romanesque style church was built in 1849. A school and manse was built next to it. There was riot here when all the church windows were smashed in 1860. A visiting minister advertised a talk entitle “The Heathenism of Popery Proved”. This incensed around 1,000 Catholics in Maitland who attacked the church and several parishioners and the homes of prominent Presbyterians! |
