| 説明 | Garnet peridotite from the Precambrian of Norway. (field of view ~5.7 centimeters)This colorful rock from near Åheim, Norway looks like eclogite, a crystalline-textured, very high grade metamorphic rock composed of garnet and omphacite pyroxene. But it's not eclogite. This is garnet peridotite, a crystalline-textured, ultramafic, intrusive igneous rock. The purplish-red masses are pyrope garnet. The paler green material is olivine. The bright green material is chromian diopside pyroxene (= clinopyroxene). Some brownish enstatite pyroxene (= orthopyroxene) is also present.Peridotites are quarried in the Åheim area for their olivine content, which has multiple industrial and environmental uses.Geologic unit: Almklovdalen Peridotite (Western Gneiss Region), apparently Proterozoic (possibly Paleoproterozoic)Locality: undisclosed/unrecorded site (probably a quarry) near the town of Åheim, Vanylven Municipality, Møre og Romsdal County, southwestern Norway |
