説明Built in 1908, this Prairie-style house was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for Larkin Company executive Walter V. Davidson, whom was impressed by Wright’s designs for the Larkin Administration Building and Darwin D. Martin House. The house was the home of Davidson until 1913, when he left the Larkin Company and moved out of the house, creating a new business known as the Davidson Shoe Company. The house was later expanded in the 1930s, adding a garage and additional rooms, while closely matching the original structure. The house features economical stucco cladding and wood trim, with very simple detailing and clear glass, which were demonstrative of the relatively low budget available to build the house, contrasting massively with the larger and far more ornate and more expensive roman brick-clad Darwin D. Martin House, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright a few years prior, and located several blocks to the south. The house features a stucco-clad exterior with wooden trim, low-pitched hipped roofs with unadorned wide overhanging eaves, transparent leaded art glass windows, a one-story front wing with a narrow band of windows wrapping around the entire perimeter, a planter in the front, and a recessed covered porch on the east side, narrow horizontal bands of windows on the first and second floors of the front facade, a two-story living room on the east side of the house with a large wrap-around two-story window, a two-story addition on the west side of the house with narrower eaves, windows that match the originals, and a garage and small recessed porch with an arched opening on the first floor, and a one-story porch to the rear of the house, which mostly bisects the rear garden. The interior features decorative simple woodwork, built in cabinetry, a two-story living room on the east side of the house, and was designed to maximize access to light and air from all areas of the house, with the window panes being unevenly oriented, allowing for varied refraction of light, allowing for additional privacy inside the house, three bedrooms, and a master suite over the garage on the second floor of the 1930s western addition. The Walter V. Davidson House has been well-preserved by its subsequent owners, and maintains all of its character-defining features. The house is a contributing structure in the Parkside East Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.
