| 説明 | Source: Cesare Beccaria (1738-1794), Afhandling om Brott och Straff: öfwerfåttning (Stockholm: Tryckt hos Wennberg och Nordström, 1770); call # SSP B386 1770.First edition in Swedish of Beccaria's DEI DELITTI E DELLE PENE, "the most influential book in the whole history of criminology" (Printing and the Mind of Man)."In the drawing [Beccaria] sketched out and sent to his publisher to be engraved for the third edition of his work, in 1765, there is a figure of Justice with the features of a Minerva, thus uniting law and wisdom. The figure recoils in horror from the severed heads the executioner is offering her, while she turns her benevolent and smiling gaze towards the instruments of work -- shovels, saws, etc. The death penalty was to be replaced by hard labour. Only in this way would society avoid commiting a juridical crime, and the criminal be able to pay his debt to society." -- Franco Venturi, UTOPIA AND REFORM IN THE ENLIGHTENMENT (Cambridge University Press, 1971), 105-106. |
