| 説明 | Built in 1896, this six-story Beaux Arts-style building was constructed as the Buckingham Hotel, taking advantage of the upcoming 1901 Pan-American Exposition, eventually transitioning to usage as an apartment building after the fair ended. The building features a rusticated stone block base, rusticated red brick first floor with large windows featuring stone sills, an entrance with a gothic arched transom, a decorative trim panel above, and the building’s name, “The Buckingham”, emblazoned on a panel above the door, a cornice at the top of the first floor creating a large horizontal band below the second floor windows, multiple three-story oriel windows, with two on the Allen Street Facade and five on the Mariner Street facade, with curved bases featuring decorative elements reminiscent of brackets, spandrel panels containing festoons, and pilasters at the corners, stone lintels on the non-oriel windows, and belt coursing at the base of the windows on the second, third, and fourth floors, brick wall dormers above each oriel with gable roofs, gabled and shed dormers alternating across the building’s mansard roof, and a decorative faux blind balustrade at the base of the roof above the building’s upper cornice. The building is a contributing structure in the Allentown Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. |
