| 説明 | Built in 1891, this Romanesque Revival and Classical Revival-style church was designed by Michael Sheehan, and was latter renovated in 1904 to its present appearance under the direction of Albert A. Post for a predominately Roman Catholic Italian immigrant community that had settled in the adjacent neighborhoods, most of which were lost to urban renewal in the mid-20th Century. The church originally had a lower floor with a school, a centrally placed bell tower, and a smaller sanctuary, but was enlarged due to the growth of the Italian immigrant community in the early 20th Century during a renovation, resulting in the structure attaining its present appearance and configuration. The building features a red brick exterior with a front and rear gable roof, stone base, corinthian stone pilasters, roman arched stained glass windows, a large pediment over the central three bays of the front facade, a Romanesque bell tower with an open belfry at the northeast corner of the building, three entry doors with arched transoms, and an interior with Italian Renaissance Revival detailing. The church remains active as a Catholic parish church, though the community it once served has long since vanished, and it now sits marooned amid a sea of surface parking behind Buffalo City Hall at the edge of Downtown Buffalo. |
