| 説明 | Picture taken circa September, 1902, showing excavation work in progress for construction of the Craig Department Store in Cambridge, Ohio. After a brick building on the Craig lot was demolished in preparation for excavation, the west wall of the adjoining J. O. McIlyar building, containing a meat market and second floor parlor, collapsed in late May, 1902. The rest of the meat market building then had to be demolished, too. In this picture, the original Wheeling Avenue door frame of the meat market is still standing and visible. The advertisement for Maloney's Wedding Day, a musical comedy put on by a touring performing troupe, is actually attached to the former interior east wall of the meat market. In the series of small pictures at the bottom of the large advertisement, there is a picture of some historical importance just below the left side of the letter "W" in "Wedding". Though a bit blurry, the image of a boy's head there (with bow tie) was once cited in a court case as an early version of what later became the well-known face of Alfred E. Newman, the cartoon character symbolic of Mad Magazine many years later. In a copyright infringement case against Mad Magazine, the Maloney's Wedding Day picture resembling Alfred E. Newman was used to make the case that the image was historically in the public domain and had not been copied from specific artwork made in 1914. [Picture courtesy of Dave Wilson] |
