説明 | Opened in 1928, the Detroit Zoo is located in the suburb of Royal Oak, Michigan, north of the city of Detroit. The Detroit Zoological Society, founded in 1911, purchased the site in 1916, and had the zoo’s layout designed by landscape architect Arthur A. Shurtleff in 1924, with a main axis stretching from the entrance and the old Aviary to the east to the Polar Bear exhibit to the west. Off of this main axis are located various habitats and exhibits with a variety of animals. The zoo is notable for being the first in the United States to display animals in naturalistic environments behind moats rather than in cages behind bars, and viewing platforms that allowed for several exhibits to be seen from a single location. The zoo has been expanded and modernized over time, though many of the original buildings still remain on the property. These photos were taken at night in late November 2022, when there was a snowstorm and the zoo’s annual Wild Lights exhibit was on display. |
