| 説明 | Built in 1931-32, this Collegiate Gothic Revival-style building was designed by Barber and McMurry to replace a previous gymnasium on the same site, and was dedicated as a memorial to University of Tennessee students whom had died fighting in World War I. The building features a red brick exterior, a low-slope roof with a crenellated parapet, limestone trim, two bay windows on the north facade with limestone tracery, five entry doors with gothic arched portals and decorative light fixtures, decorative brickwork on the east and west wings of the building, and a large oriel on the rear with machicolations and decorative corbels. The building originally housed several gymnasiums, a large main arena and auditorium space, a massive swimming pool, and was the university’s main arena until the Stokely Athletics Center was completed in 1959, but served as the home of the university’s Women’s Basketball program until 1977. The building’s east wing was adaptively reused as a dance studio and offices in 1974, with the rest of the building being renovated between 1999 and 2002 to house classrooms, performance spaces, and offices, initially housing the College of Arts and Sciences and the Arts and Sciences Advising Center before becoming home to the Language Resources Center of the Modern Foreign Languages Department. |
