| 説明 | Built in 1886, this Gothic Revival-style church was designed by Joseph Baumann built on the site of the first Catholic parish church in Knoxville, which was built in 1855 in response to a growing Irish Catholic immigrant population in the city. The building features a red brick exterior, buttresses, a gabled roof, gothic arched stained glass windows, pinnacles, a steeple with a tall spire and four clock faces on the roof corners, brick cobbling, front entry doors with gothic arched transoms and stone trim, stone belt coursing on the front facade, a belfry with louvers, a trapezoidal apse, a modernist parish house flanking a courtyard beside the church, and a one-story rear wing with a low-slope roof, brick pilasters, and a rooftop parapet. The building continues to serve as a Catholic Parish church for Downtown Knoxville, though the main Catholic Cathedral for Knoxville is located to the west at another parish, founded later, which has a relatively new neotraditional building based on traditional Basilica architecture. |
