説明 | Built in 1917, this Classical Revival-style building was constructed to serve as a school for Columbus, North Carolina and the surrounding area of Polk County. Initially known as the Columbus Institute, the school was renamed in 1919 to memorialize Ohio-born industrialist Frank Stearns, whom donated the land on which the school sits so that the building could be built. Initially serving as a school for all grades, the building saw the addition of a gymnasium building to the rear by the New Deal-era Works Progress Administration (WPA) and the construction of an agricultural and vocational building on the campus, along with decorative stone walls in the 1930s. Following the consolidation of the high school program, the school served as an elementary school for Columbus and the surrounding area of Polk County until it closed in 1988. The two-story building features a red brick exterior, hipped roof, central pedimented two-story front doric portico with paired doric columns and a circular attic vent, replacement windows, stone sills on the first floor, pilasters on the front facade, replacement brick spandrels at the front windows, a recessed front entry door with an alcove featuring an arched opening, enclosed vestibules at either end of the building, formerly open porches, which feature arched windows on the upper level stairwell vestibules, arched transoms above the first floor doors, and provide access to restrooms and the building’s two stairwells, a rear auditorium wing at the south end of the L-shaped building with partially bricked-in arched window openings and stone sills and lintels, and metal canopies extending out from the building towards the adjacent streets. After ceasing operations as a school in 1988, the main building was converted into the School Board offices for Polk County, and also serves as a community center, while the gymnasium was converted into a recreation center, and the grounds converted into a public park in front of the building and a school bus maintenance garage behind the building. |
