| 説明 | Built in 1954 and expanded with an addition in the 1970s, this modern building was constructed to house the Union Hall of the United Steelworkers of America, made up of workers at the nearby Bethlehem Steel Plant. The building features a red brick exterior, concrete roof, low-slope roof with a parapet, aluminum windows with concrete sills, limestone cladding at the front entrances with corner-wrapping curtain walls, a central perpendicular “fin” running down the center, banded brick reveals at the second story between the windows, ribbon windows on the second floor, and two double entry doors. The building saw an addition on its east side in the 1970s, which features a much simpler exterior, aluminum windows, an additional entrance, and a recessed doorway and windows on the first floor with angled walls, and a roofline matching the original building. The building houses offices and gathering spaces for the United Steelworkers, as well as community spaces, including meeting halls and a bowling alley. The building is a noncontributing structure in the Central Bethlehem Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972, though it has since stood long enough to be eligible for listing individually or as part of a district. |
