| 説明 | Built between 1906 and 1909, this hydroelectric dam on the Wisconsin River at Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin was the largest hydroelectric station west of Niagara Falls at the time of its completion. The dam has a power generating capacity of 10 megawatts, and stands 55 feet tall and 350 feet long with spillways and gates over the top, which separates the Dells of the Wisconsin River into a lower section and an upper section, and flooded several caves and rock formations in the upper dells. The Renaissance Revival-style powerhouse features large arched windows, side gable red tile roof with end gable parapets, and slightly extruded pilasters with recessed panels at the corners and framing the central bay of the building. The dam was named for the surrounding city of Kilbourn, Wisconsin, which was named for Byron Kilbourn, president of the La Crosse and Milwaukee Railroad Company, later the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad (Milwaukee Road), which founded the town, but changed its name to Wisconsin Dells in 1931 in order to better reflect its status as a popular tourist destination. |
