説明 | 2009-2014The various stages of the works on this building.Rome is a complex and unique city with thousands of years of history. Every urban transformation calls for extraordinary efforts to reconcile the growing metropolis with the preservation of its heritage. The Roman Archaeological Superintendence (Ministry of Cultural Heritage) and ENPAM have from the outset shared a common goal for the creation of tis museum: the restitution of a shared asset. Achieving this aim has required specialised resources, technologies, professional commitment and highly specialised services over the course of almost 20 years, including the excavation of almost 30,000 cubic meters of archaeological strata: a unique engineering solution to support the archaeological remains atop an underground car park, a research team tasked with the excavations and the study of contexts and materials: endeavours by a multidisciplinary specialist team dealing with the communication of the museum. This was a rare case of what is normally called 'rescue archaeology', typically hampered by severe time limits and with little opportunity for in-depth studies. Here' the farsightedness of the organisations turned challenges into resources and accomplished a major research project: a model to be followed, in a city that demands modernity but cannot abandon the preservation of its immense heritage. As if browsing through a memory book, the documents, administrative authorisations, photographs, objects and people conjure up the long story of this project, showing the many key players that make it possible to accomplish it and narrating the different stages of its realisation. |
