| 説明 | Sandstone from the Devonian of Ireland.Sandstone is the # 2 most common sedimentary rock on Earth. It is composed of sand-sized grains, which are between 2 millimeters and 1/16 of a millimeter in size. Most sandstones are dominated by quartz grains, but feldspar sand grains and lithic sand grains (= sand-sized rock fragments) are often present as well. This sample is from the Old Red Sandstone in Ireland. The unit is a mostly Devonian-aged succession of nonmarine siliciclastic sedimentary rocks that occurs in Britain and Ireland. The reddish coloration is from hematite (Fe2O3, iron oxide). Sediments were deposited as the ancient Caledonian Mountains eroded down. The Caledonians formed by tectonic collision between the ancient continents of Baltica and Laurentia. Baltica is the Scandinavian paleo-continent (= western Russia + Scandinavia + parts of mainland northern Europe). Laurentia is the North American paleo-continent (= most of North America + Greenland). In America, the equivalent to the Old Red Sandstone is the ancient Catskill Delta, another clastic wedge deposited next to the Caledonian Mountains.Stratigraphy: Old Red Sandstone, Dingle Group, DevonianLocality: Connor Pass, Dingle Peninsula, Kerry County, southwestern Ireland-------------------------------Info. at:en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Red_Sandstone |
