| 説明 | "That ye fame of Sir John Shurley of Isfeild in ye county of Susse, knight, may be pretious in ye memory of all men till ye change of ye last man.Be it delivered to posterity that Sir John Shurley, knight, was of an ancient family, of a magnanimous hart ; of an exemplary industry; of a justines beyond exception; that he was stout in good causes, yea & good in all cause.His first wife was daughter unto Sir Thomas Shirley of Wiston, knight, by who he had 2 sonnes & 7 daughters, ye sonnes & 2 daughters are called into heaven & ye 5 living into severall marriages of good quality; His second wife was daughter to George Goring of Danny, Receaver of ye Court of Wardes & aunt to ye Right Hon ye Lord Goring , Master of the Horse to ye Queene; & received into all mens affections. She was ye widdow of Sir Henry Bowyer of Cuckfield in ye county of Sussex, knight. She was a meritte beyond most of her time, for her purse was open to a prophets name. Here pitty was ye clothing of ye poore, her piety ye mother of her practise. Her devotions were her daily offerings to God, her mercy sure against condemnation, & all her minutes were but steppes to heaven.The above named Sir John Shurley (being Deputie Lieutenant & Justie of ye peace & Coram of this county of Sussex) deceassed at Lewes ye 25th of April Anno Domini 1631" Sir John Shurley 1631 lies between his 2 wives on three steps, his children kneel below.
