| 説明 | Built in 1941-1942, this Art Moderne and Art Deco-style former movie theater was built by Pete Smith as a movie theater for the residents of Bellevue, replacing the earlier Sylvia Theater, which was owned by Smith and operated from 1929 until 1942. The building features a brick exterior with glazed brick on the front facade, gates and passageways for emergency egress on either side of the building, dark red brick accents on the multi-tone orange brick front facade, including trim around the second-story glass block windows, a glazed red brick base, and belt courses of red brick at the base of the parapet and second floor, a large curved portion of the facade in the center of the building made of orange, white, and blue enameled metal panels, with the white panels forming vertical elements in the center and on the sides, and the orange panels forming a central vertical element and the horizontal elements at the top of this portion of the building, an Art Deco-style marquee with neon lighting, lightbulbs on the bottom, and the theater’s name in letters atop the marquee, decorative tiles in an Art Deco pattern around the front entrance, including on the ticket booth, around the doors, and below the marquee, with heavy use of simple geometric forms, and doors with half-circle windows. The building no longer serves as a movie theater, but maintains most of its original character-defining features on the front facade and inside the lobby and theater space, and is both a contributing structure in the Fairfield Avenue Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988, and was listed individually on the National Register of Historic Places in 2015. |
