| 説明 | This is a view from one of the many porches or porticos that adorn the eight sides of the opulent Longwood house in Natchez, Mississippi. The ornate woodwork was carved and milled In faraway Philadelphia and brought in by ship and river boat by the owners, cotton planter Haller Nutt and his wife, Julia. Only the first (basement) level of the plantation house was completed when the Civil War broke out. The workers, mostly northerners, fled north, dropping their tools as they left. The interior of the upper levels remains unfinished, just as when the workers left. Natchez, located on the Mississippi River, was a pivotal city in the great conflict. Longwood has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1971. Double-click image to enlarge. |
