| 説明 | Built in 1962, this modern building was designed by George McLaughlin to house the congregation of St. Augustine Catholic Church, which is the successor to two earlier churches, a small chapel that was built in 1854 and a church built in 1901 and expanded in 1910 and 1925. The church features a distinctive A-frame design with a steep copper front gable roof sloping to low eaves on the sides, steep gables on the sides featuring stained glass windows and decorative circular masonry openings at street level, a large stained glass curtain wall on the front facade, a front courtyard behind a retail building on Kalakaua Avenue, decorative copper doors with pointed profiles, a rear modernist rectory with a front gable roof, wooden vertical baffles, and a masonry base, and a landscaped courtyard between the rectory and the rear of the church. The church is one of many modernist buildings built between the 1950s and 1980s that define the Waikiki neighborhood, transforming it from a quiet oceanside district into a bustling international tourist destination. |
