| 説明 | West Bay Harbour (formerly Bridport Harbour), Dorset, 1 August 2022. Previous harbours were built farther to the east where the River Brit then reached the sea where East Beach is today but were destroyed by storms and rebuilt but by the 18th Century became inadequate for the increasing size of ships. The current harbour was built by John Reynolds in 1740-44 on a new site to the west and the River Brit was also diverted. In addition, shipbuilding yards were built adjacent to the west (closed 1885). Adjacent to the east a purpose-built terrace of lodging houses for tourists was built in 1884-85 in the English Arts & Crafts style, the architect being Edward Schroeder Prior by |
