説明 | Built in 1897, this Richardsonian Romanesque-style building was designed by Clinton Briggs Ripley and C. W. Dickey for William G. Irwin, serving as a commercial rental property until 1923, when it was sold to The Nippu Jiji, whom moved their offices into the building. Founded in 1895, The Nippu Jiji, later known as the Hawaii Times after being forced to change its name during World War II, was a Japanese-English newspaper, which operated until 1985. The building features a rusticated bluestone facade with checkerboard pattern relief, arched transoms on the second floor, one-over-one double-hung windows, corbeled cornice, a rooftop balustrade, and first floor storefronts at several retail spaces with bluestone and cast iron pillars. The building is a contributing structure in the Chinatown Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. |
